Abstract: Current Argentinian legislation (Regulation Ndegree 12/88 S.A.G.y P.) requires that in legumes, the germination percentage includes normal seedlings plus 100% of hard seeds'. This assumes that all hard seeds are 100% viable. Here we quantify the proportion of viable hard seeds in Medicago sativa L., Lotus corniculatus L., Trifolium repens L., Trifolium pratense L., and Melilotus alba Med. Fifty hard seeds of fifty different lots from each species were evaluated by topographical tetrazolium test. The hypothesis that all hard seeds are viable was accepted only in T. repens and 90% viability was evident in T. pratense, W. sativa and M. alba. There was no evidence to suggest a standard viability percentage of L. corniculatus hard seeds.
