Search for a songwriter We managed to get a few minutes with the Editor, Music at Radio 2, Colin Martin, in between listening to boxes of demos SOS: How many entries were you expecting? Colin: We were expecting maybe 2 or 3 thousand and by the closing date we had received 15 thousand - we are absolutely astounded by the amount of interest out there. SOS: So you really didn’t expect this many? Colin: They say everybody has a book inside them – it seems no doubt that everyone has a song inside them. We were amazed. People have taken a lot of care, a lot of time and have included jpg images, photos written realms about themselves – its amazing how much care people have taken – we’ve been really, really thrilled at the response we’ve got. SOS: What will happen to the winning song? Colin: Originally the competition was set up to look for a winning song that is the end product. However, we are now going to get it performed when we take Radio 2 to Liverpool. SOS: it must be a huge task to find the winner? Colin : Yes we’re looking for one song – which has made our job really hard. Can you imagine 15,000 football teams going in to play for a cup and eventually it has to whittle down to one winner? It’s very hard. Everybody’s been working flat out all the music producers in the department have been asked to help with the listening process we’ve got professional people who work for record companies and publishers so it’s been a mammoth effort. A shortlist will go to a committee of producers who sit on the play list committee from this we will get a final shortlist of ten. These ten songs will be recorded and these ten demos will go forward to our celebrity judging panel.
