Simply a guitar, usually electric that has been set up to play an overriding melody or guitar
lick over and above the backing track . It may have some effects such as distortion to help distinguish it from the rhythm guitar (for example: Eric Clapton's playing in "Layla"). The feel of a lead guitar can be quite 'vocal', and added effects can give it incredible drive and intensity.

Lick
A lick is a musical phrase,
melody , passage or capability that a lead can call upon in moments of spontaneity or planned progressions. They are able to play quickly, easily and blend with the music in such a manner that the phrase will always fit. When the spotlight falls on Keith Richards on stage you can bet he’s about to lick.
