Miconia (
Miconia calvescens
) is a large tree that grows up to 50 feet tall with large oval-shaped leaves.
The leaves are green on top and (in the strain in Hawaii) purple underneath, with three main midribs running from stem to leaf tip.
According to Dr. Ray Fosberg of the Smithsonian Institution, is "the one plant that could really destroy the Hawaiian forest."
