From Cape Wrath to Rattray Head including Orkney - (SWW) 24 hour forecast: West backing southeast 4 or 5, increasing 6 to gale 8, perhaps severe gale 9 later, veering south later. Moderate or rough, occasionally slight in Moray Firth. Squally showers, rain for a time. Moderate or good occasionally poor.

Outlook for the following 24 hours: South 6 to gale 8, increasing severe gale 9, perhaps storm 10 at times, veering west or southwest later. Moderate or rough, occasionally very rough. Squally showers. Good.

Rattray Head to Berwick on Tweed - (SWW) 24 hour forecast: South or southwest 5, increasing 7 or gale 8, perhaps severe gale 9 later. Slight or moderate, occasionally rough later. Squally showers, rain for a time. Moderate or good.

Outlook for the following 24 hours: South or southwest 7 to severe gale 9, increasing storm 10 at times, veering west later. Slight or moderate occasionally rough, becoming very rough for a time. Squally showers. Good.

Berwick on Tweed to Whitby - (SWW) 24 hour forecast: South backing southwest for a time, 4 or 5, increasing 7 or gale 8, perhaps severe gale 9 later. Slight or moderate. Fair then rain for a time, squally showers later. Moderate or good.

The Channel Islands - (SWW) 24 hour forecast: West 6 to gale 8, slowly backing southwest to south and increasing f7 to severe gale 9 during the evening. Rough to very rough. Outbreaks of rain and drizzle dying out in the morning. Moderate to poor, becoming mainly good.

Outlook for the following 24 hours: South to southwest 7 to severe gale 9, soon veering southwest to west 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8 later. Rough to very rough, locally high overnight. Rain, heavy at times, clearing to scattered squally showers Wednesday morning. Moderate, locally poor, becoming mainly good.

We publish a detailed Inshore Waters forecast for 19 areas around the coast of the UK twice a day, at 0500 and 1700.

18 areas, excluding Shetland, cover up to 12 miles offshore and consist of a 24 hour forecast followed by an outlook for the following 24 hours.
The forecast for Shetland covers up to 60 miles offshore and consists of a 12 hour forecast followed by an outlook for the following 12 hours.
The date and time of issue is given for each forecast.
The 19 area Inshore Waters forecast is broadcast on Radio 4 at approximately 0526 (local time).
A 24 hour forecast with only 9 areas is broadcast after the main shipping forecast at approximately 0053 (local time). This is updated with the issue of strong wind warnings. These are not broadcast on Radio 4 but via local radio and Coastguard stations.
