Project Management

This section is aimed at all projects that are carried out for the BBC. The framework sets minimum requirements, allowing suitable project methodologies to be developed as required by the nature of the projects and business areas.

Scope

A business and project lifecycle is being developed for the management of technology projects where Technology Direction Group (TDG) has overall responsibility for delivery. This lifecycle is based on industry standards and, where appropriate, on existing BBC best practice and is intended to align with the Siemens 'PMLife' approach used for projects where they manage delivery as part of the overall Technology Framework Contract (TFC).

The lifecycle and processes are principally aimed at improving the BBC's quality management of technology projects. The templates are intended for use within the BBC and are not mandated for external suppliers. Specifically, they do not apply to the delivery element of those projects managed by Siemens through the TFC, which has its own project delivery methodology and reporting framework.
The set of processes and templates is currently incomplete, however the business need is to improve the management of key technology projects now, so the available information is being released for review and immediate use.

Further advice is also given in the Technology Investments section.

Definition of a Project

A project is a set of related activities organised to produce specific and predefined deliverables, and has finite start and end dates, to achieve a BBC business objective with an agreed cost.

Projects generally form part of a programme of work to achieve specific business objectives.
