This section of DQ covers the BBC desktop build used on most PCs.
Desktop Policy Ref 01 Supported, BBC standard desktop builds will be used on all PCs unless there is a valid business need / reason why they should not be. The use of non-standard or unsupported desktops will require approval.
Desktop Policy Ref 02 Desktop build versions must be kept updated in line with standards listed in the Desktop Currency DQ document.
Desktop Policy Ref 03 The BBC’s corporate browsers versions, as defined in the Browser Currency Policy , will be updated from time to time as indicated on the User Platform roadmap to ensure that BBC staff have access to the most secure and functional browser. It is the responsibility of those developing content and applications to ensure that content renders and functions correctly on at least the current and previous versions of browser (although general best practise is to ensure that content is ‘platform agnostic’ and will run on any common OS/browser platform). PLEASE NOTE the following for Internet Explorer 7 : As stated in the Browser Currency Policy , Internet Explorer is the corporate standard browser for the PC. In addition to being used to access internet content and to access internal content on the BBC’s Intranet (‘Gateway’), it also provides the platform to deliver a range of applications and business processes to the BBC’s staff. The next BBC-wide update to Internet Explorer version 7 will take place as part of the desktop update expected in October 2008. Siemens can make IE7 available on request to individual machines should you require a copy for the purposes of testing your content for compatibility. Such requests should be emailed to SIS Release Management and Build Support.
The following is a list of useful, related policies from other areas of DQ.
The main Delivering Quality policies always apply.
Applications Policy Ref 01 The BBC will remain fully licensed for all software. See overall BBC Licensing Policy and Software Licensing Policy for the desktop
Applications Policy Ref 02 The BBC will maintain software versions appropriate to the business need.
