Audiences

Audience research and the BBC Vision commissioning process

The BBC has a wide range of audience information, which can be useful at different stages of the commissioning process.

Pre-commission - INFORM

We update the Audiences section on the Commissioning site on a quarterly basis with the latest information and insights about UK audiences.

There is also lots of information about our strategic and audience needs within our genre development priorities and our services section .

The information shared at this point is intended to help inform your proposal.

Post-commission - SHAPE

After commissioning we may, if necessary, share more audience information with you to further build your understanding of the genre, slot and audiences that the content is intended for. This could for example be knowledge about the viewing habits and lifestyles of audiences to the kind of programme you are making, or it could be insights from pilots or specific research. The information would usually be supplied at a briefing session.

In some cases, where a programme is a particular strategic priority, your commissioner may ask a member of the Audience Planning team to work more closely with you to help inform development from an audience perspective.

The information shared at this point will help you shape the content and maximise the audience relevance and impact.

This information will be made available, where appropriate, through your Commissioner or BBC Executive Producer

Post-TX - EVALUATE

After TX we can share performance data relating to your programme or on-line content. This includes viewing figures (TV, iPlayer, online stats), data on how much our audience appreciated the content and, in some cases more detailed feedback (depending on audience size). The data will be shared with you in electronic format, or in a one-to-one session with the BBC.

Please note: We can only share this information with companies for the programmes they have produced.

The information shared at this point gives the BBC and you a shared understanding of content performance for future content development.

You can arrange for the information to be sent to you via your BBC Executive Producer.
