Peaktime Cloning Policy for Inhouse Programmes

Notes:

  • Only linear TV output needs to be cloned.
  • Where the programme is a co-commission between either BBC ONE or BBC TWO and one of the digital channels a clone must be made.
  • BBC Post Production can make the clone as part of the programme’s Technical Review if requested. Please note that if the Transmission master is edited the clone should be as well, so that both are identical.

  • Exclusions - a clone is not required for the following output:
  • All Programme Acquisitions output
  • Learning Zone output
  • Non live sports output i.e. sports highlights Live programmes (where the current process to have a Programme as Broadcast (PasB) made will remain unchanged).

  • Background
Pre April 2003, back-up copies of all recorded peaktime programmes transmitting on BBC ONE and BBC TWO were produced, primarily to safeguard transmission - they were played out in sync with the masters to provide added resilience. These clones were subsequently held by I&A and they play an important part in helping preserve the integrity of the archive.
Post April 2003, all programmes are transmitted from server, with additional server back-ups, so clones are no longer required as part of the playout process. However, their importance to the archive means that it has been agreed that their production should continue.
Consequently, clones of TX tapes should not be sent direct to RED BEE MEDIA but should instead either be retained locally pre TX or, post spot-checking at Tech Review, sent direct to I&A for filing. NB the 'Person Responsible' (as nominated in the Contact Details section of the TX form) must be aware of the exact location of the clone copy pre-transmission in case the master goes missing during delivery.
