Information is an important component of the bird conservation process. Biologists, conservationists, managers and policy makers need scientific data and information on birds and their habitats to identify if there is a problem, understand what the problem is, and make informed decisions that will have an impact on the status of bird populations. The NBII Bird Conservation Node and partners are working together to improve Internet access to data and information needed to support the bird conservation process. Inside Bird Conservation
Bird Conservation has been a national priority in the United States since the early 1900s, when it was recognized that humans could have a negative impact on the long-term sustainability of bird populations in North America. Birds are valuable to humans as they provide not only aesthetic enjoyment but also important ecological services (seed dispersal, pollination, predation, scavenging, nutrient deposition, ecosystem engineering), economic services (food, recreation), and cultural services (birds in art and religion). Interest in birds and their conservation remains high due to their intrinsic and extrinsic values. Recent findings that a third of North America's bird populations declined during the last half of the 20th century, point to the continued need for bird conservation at local, state, regional, national and continental scales.
