What does being disabled mean?

Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson

Being disabled can mean a lot of different things.

Doctors describe someone with a disability as having an 'impairment' which makes it hard for a disabled person to do day to day things.

But lots of people aren't happy with this description. They say it's not someone's impairment that stops them from doing things, it's because the world isn't set up to include disabled people.

For example places that aren't easy for wheelchair users to get into because there are lots of steps.

It is also important to remember that lots of disabilities aren't just physical - many are hidden. For example you might not be able to tell that someone is deaf.
