The youths used the firework to shoot balls of flame

Police have warned of the dangers of fireworks after a group of youngsters were filmed using a firework to shoot balls of flame at each other.

The children lit Roman candles and used them to shoot the flames near a sports centre in Park Road, Dingle.

In the footage, filmed on a mobile phone, a fireball hit one of the children in the back.

Merseyside Police have urged anyone who spots youths misusing fireworks around the city to contact them.

Supt Julie Cooke said: "At this time of year we would like to stress the potential dangers of fireworks misuse.

"It is illegal for retailers to sell fireworks to those under 18, and for people to buy fireworks on their behalf.

"I would appeal to parents to be vigilant in ensuring that their children remain safe around fireworks and do not handle them personally.

"I would strongly urge anyone who sees fireworks being misused to contact the police immediately for the safety of the children concerned."

She said it was "encouraging" to see a fall in the number of incidents in comparison to the same period last year.

"I would hope that by continuing to work in partnership with retailers and other emergency services that this reduction continue through bonfire night itself," Supt Cooke added.
