But the use of amplifiers has left some residents of Cairo yearning for a more harmonious sound.
Now, the Egyptian government says it is almost ready to begin broadcasting the voice of a single muezzin - the man who calls worshippers to prayer - to every mosque.
But not everyone is happy, as Christian Fraser reports.
