Boxer Mike Tyson was mobbed by fans at a shopping centre in Merthyr Tydfil as he made a personal pilgrimage to the statues of two local boxing legends.

Tyson said he believed it was important for any fighters visiting Wales to pay homage to boxers who had gone before them.

Hundreds of fans gathered at St Tydfil's shopping centre as the boxer made an impromptu visit to the statue of Johnny Owen, who was fatally injured in a contest 29 years ago today.

The former world heavyweight, who watched Owen's last fight in 1980, laid flowers at the statue before visiting the nearby statue of another local legend, former world featherweight champion Howard Winstone. READ MORE: South East Hall of Fame: Johnny Owen
