BBC National Orchestra of Wales continnue Cardiff Season with a Programme of Iconic works
BBC National Orchestra of Wales continue with the second concert in the Cardiff Season at St David's Hall. Cardiff on Friday 3 October 2008, 7.30pm with a programme of two iconic works; Stravinsky's The Firebird and Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto
For the concert the Orchestra will be conducted by Principal Conductor Thierry Fischer and joined by pianist Nelson Goerner .
Conductor Fischer's hallmarks are a lightness of touch and transparency of texture, allowing room for vivid characterisation. He has a keen stylistic sense and brings a fresh approach to repertoire.
Born in 1969 in Argentina, Nelson Goerner has established himself as one of the foremost pianists of his generation through his concert performances and cd recordings. He has performed many recitals in venues throughout Europe, UK, Canada and America including performances with the Deutsche Symphonie Orchestra of Berlin with conductor Andrew Davis, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra with Gerard Schwarz. He has also appeared at the BBC Proms with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Vassily Sinaisky. The music in the October 3 concert will lead the audience into a world of mystery and barbaric splendour in Stravinsky's brilliant ballet score, 'The Firebird' . In this, his first ballet, the composer made an excellent debut drawing on a dazzling array of orchestral colours. At the same time as he was writing it, his contemporary Rachmaninov was writing his deeply felt Third Piano Concerto into which he poured his most personal feelings with a wealth of limitless melody.
