BBC National Orchestra of Wales
Thursday 12 November - Sunday 15 November 2009
This autumn music lovers can join the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for fantastic evenings of musical masterpieces as the Orchestra take to the road on their Mid and North Wales tour.
On Thursday 12 November, 7.30pm at Aberystwyth Arts Centre and on Saturday 14 November, 7.30pm at William Aston Hall, Glandwr University , Wrexham guest conductor Garry Walker will join jennifer and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales on the opening night of the Orchestra's Mid and North Wales tour.
Garry Walker is Permanent Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and as well as conducting nationally and internationally, Garry is an enthusiastic hill walker and climber and recently completed his mission to climb all 284 of the Munro Mountains in Scotland.
Following Cimarosa's Overture, Il matrimonio segreto, Jennifer Pike will join the Orchestra for a performance of Mendelssohn's well-loved Violin Concerto.
Jennifer Pike has emerged as one of the most gifted of the younger generation of British artists. Her close relationship with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sir Andrew Davis dates back to her victory as the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2002, when her performance of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto saw her become the youngest ever winner of the competition.
The concert will also feature Britten's Soirees Musicales and will conclude with Shostakovich's sparkling and exuberant Ninth Symphony, written to celebrate the end of the war; it was far from the reverential work anticipated by his countrymen.
On Friday 13 November, 7.30pm at Prichard Jones Hall, Bangor and Sunday 15 November, 3pm at Venue Cymru, Llandudno , guest conductor Garry Walker will join the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for a concert featuring a great symphonic work and an insight into the sound-world of the French Horn.
The concert will feature music from the great classical masters;opening with Haydn's jubilant Symphony No 70 followed by Mathias' Horn Concerto, which features BBC National Orchestra of Wales' own principal French Horn player Tim Thorpe.
The second half heralds a contrasting French Horn performance with Mozart's Concerto Rondo in Eb. Scored for just two oboes, two horns and strings, it will provide a delicate start to the concert finale, leading into Beethoven's joyful Second Symphony; a fantastic example of his understanding of the symphony orchestra and its true potential.
