Ilan Volkov is the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor having previously held the post of Chief Conductor from January 2003-September 2009. At the time of his appointment, he became the youngest person to hold such a position with a BBC orchestra, having made his debut in 1998. As Chief Conductor he conducted more than 25 concerts each season, including the BBC Proms, Edinburgh and Huddersfield festivals, and he led the orchestra on tours including South America and the Netherlands. Through his programming, he plays a vital role in the orchestra’s commitment to contemporary music.
A frequent guest conductor with orchestras throughout the world, Ilan Volkov has regular relationships with the Munich Philharmonic, Ensemble Modern, musikFrabrik, Israel Philharmonic, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris and the National Symphony Orchestra Washington. Forthcoming debuts include the Bamberg Symphony, SWR Freiburg, BBC Symphony, Orchestre National de Lyon, RSB Berlin and the Rotterdam Philharmonic.
Ilan Volkov regularly records for the Hyperion label. Recent CDs made with the BBC SSO include music by Stravinsky, Arensky and Taneyev, Roslavets, Janácek and Britten. His CD releases with the BBC SSO for NMC include music by Jonathan Harvey, which subsequently received a 2008 Gramophone Award.
